TMB counterclockwise or clockwise: which to choose?

In short
Counterclockwise (France → Italy → Switzerland) is the classic: more services along the way for many hikers. Clockwise (France → Switzerland → Italy) reverses cols and villages. The loop stays about 150.9 km / +11,240 m ascent. Choose by bookings, weather, and stage preference — the planner supports both.
Counterclockwise: the classic
You often start from Les Houches / Chamonix valley, pass Les Contamines and Les Chapieux, drop toward Courmayeur, climb the Swiss side (La Fouly, Champex, Trient), then return via Argentière and Flégère. It is the best-documented direction and often the best served by lodges and shuttles.
Reference stage lengths (Trekalto catalogue) are listed in the 7 / 9 / 11 days guide.
Clockwise: the other rhythm
Clockwise, you hit Switzerland first, then Italy. Ascents and descents reverse: a long descent one way becomes a climb the other. Useful if critical nights are easier in that order, or if you prefer a different profile.
Bookings and borders
Either way, critical nights (Nova, Mottets, Elisabetta, Bonatti, Trient, Flégère, Lac Blanc) stay the same — only the sequence changes. You still cross FR / IT / CH: ID, EUR in France and Italy, CHF in Switzerland. See Italy–Switzerland practicalities.
FAQ
Which direction is most common?
Counterclockwise (FR → IT → CH) is the classic, often with more services.
Does mileage change by direction?
The loop is the same (~150.9 km / +11,240 m ascent in Trekalto geometry). What changes is the order of effort and stages.
Can I mix both?
In practice you pick one direction for the whole tour, to stay consistent with bookings and usual waymarking.
