Italy and Switzerland on the TMB: borders, money, phone
Last updated 25 October 2026 · Elom ESSAN, founder of Trekalto
In short
The TMB crosses France, Italy, and Switzerland. For most EU or Swiss hikers, crossing is routine: carry ID. Currency: EUR in France and Italy, CHF in Switzerland (cards often OK, but cash helps — and is required at Les Mottets). Check Swiss roaming with your operator. Emergencies: 112.
Borders along the tour
Counterclockwise, the classic order is France → Italy → Switzerland → France. Clockwise, France → Switzerland → Italy. Checks are not a daily topic for most EU/Swiss passports, but personal rules (nationality, visa) remain your responsibility — this guide does not replace the authorities.
EUR, CHF, and cash
France and Italy: euros. Switzerland: Swiss francs. In the Trekalto catalogue, Swiss stops are often priced in CHF (e.g. Trient ~65–95 CHF, La Fouly lodge ~70–110 CHF). Cards often work, but carry cash for extras and for Les Mottets (cash or French cheque only).
Phone and emergencies
In the EU, roaming is often included depending on your plan. In Switzerland, check your operator’s terms before departure (fees possible). European emergency number: 112. Off-grid, a message to another hiker or a hut may be the only option — do not assume perfect high-mountain coverage.
Direction and services
Counterclockwise often has more services along the way; clockwise reverses the IT/CH order. Detail: clockwise vs counterclockwise. For valley access: getting to Les Houches / Chamonix.
FAQ
Do I need a visa for the TMB?
It depends on your nationality. For many EU/Swiss citizens crossing is routine; for others, check FR, IT, and CH rules before booking.
Can I pay everywhere in euros in Switzerland?
No guarantee. Carry CHF (or a card that converts). Swiss catalogue rates are often in CHF.
What number to call in an emergency?
112 works in all three countries as the European emergency number. Clearly explain your location.
Is Swiss roaming free?
Not necessarily. Check your plan: Switzerland is not always treated like the EU.
