TMB for first-timers: fitness level and how many days

In short

The TMB suits endurance hikers, not necessarily “alpine experts”, if you can handle consecutive days with ascent. The loop is about +11,240 m ascent over ~150.9 km. For a first tour, 9 or 11 days, counterclockwise, and skipping Arpette / Lac Blanc on the first try is often more realistic than a loaded 7-day plan.

Who is the tour for?

You need to be comfortable with multi-hour mountain days, with a pack, day after day. The classic route is not via ferrata or technical glacier travel, but fatigue stacks up. If unsure, lengthen the trip: the planner covers 5–12 days, with 7, 9, and 11 day pages.

Days that weigh (indicative)

Examples from the stage catalogue (indicative lengths): Contamines → Chapieux ~18.5 km / +1300 (no Croix du Bonhomme night); Bonatti → La Fouly ~19.2 km; Flégère → Houches ~16.8 km with a big descent. Arpette and Lac Blanc variants add more ascent — see variants.

Simple preparation

Before departure: weekend outings with ascent, loaded pack, broken-in shoes. On the trail: sleep enough, eat half-board, and use a transport shortcut on a hard day if needed. The Trekalto method explains how to build the plan without overloading it.

FAQ

Can a gym-fit person finish the TMB?

Cardio fitness helps, but knees and feet also need descents and pack time. Mountain outings before the trip still matter.

7 days for a beginner?

Possible if you are already very durable, but 9–11 days leave more buffer. The planner starts at 5 days for very hard or shortcut-heavy plans.

Do I need a guided leader?

Not for classic self-guided travel: waymarking and services are plentiful. A leader is a personal choice (comfort, group, language), not a trail requirement.

What if a stage is too hard?

Shortcuts (Bellevue, shuttles, bus, lifts) or a spare night in the plan. Better a “short” day than an incident.
