What to pack for a self-guided TMB
Last updated 25 October 2026 · Elom ESSAN, founder of Trekalto
In short
For a self-guided TMB with hut nights, prioritise a sleeping bag liner, summer-mountain layers, water and snacks between meals, an ID document, and EUR + CHF cash (required at Les Mottets as cash or French cheque). Half-board covers dinner and breakfast; lunch is often separate.
What huts expect
On the Association platform, half-board is standard and a sleeping bag liner is expected. Extras (drinks, etc.) are often paid in cash. See booking huts and the official FAQ.
- Sleeping bag liner
- EUR and CHF cash (Mottets: cash or French cheque only)
- ID document (FR / IT / CH borders)
- Light toiletries + compact towel
On the trail
The loop totals about +11,240 m ascent over ~150.9 km: broken-in shoes, poles if you are used to them, rain / sun protection, headlamp, offline map or track. No tech jargon needed — stay dry and hydrated.
- Already broken-in hiking shoes
- Rain jacket + light warm layer
- Sun protection and hat
- Water + day snacks
- Simple first-aid (blisters, pain relief, etc.)
Weight and what not to overload
On half-board, you do not need full camping gear. If you camp some nights (budget ~15–35 € typical), add tent / pad / stove for your style. For costing: TMB budget.
FAQ
Do I need a full sleeping bag?
In a classic hut, a liner is usually enough. A full bag adds needless weight on half-board.
Card everywhere?
Often yes in the valley and many places, but not at Les Mottets (cash or French cheque). Keep cash for extras.
How many litres of water?
It depends on heat and stage. Carry enough to the next reliable water point — long days (e.g. Contamines–Chapieux) need more buffer.
